EFN Asia Conference 2012 - “How Welfare Populism Destroys Prosperity: the Populist Challenge to Economic Freedom” PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 November 2012 14:44

Times of major economic turmoil are often the breeding ground for populism and populist policies. The success of the likes of Geert Wilders, Viktor Orban, Joseph Ejercito Estrada, and Marine Le Pen suggests that populist practises have firmly established themselves in many democracy. But is populism just a phenomenon a stable democracy can easily deal with, or is it a serious threat to prosperity, and political and economic freedom?

To discuss this issue from a liberal point of view, the Economic Freedom Network Asia decided to focus this year’s conference on “How Welfare Populism Destroys Prosperity: the Populist Challenge to Economic Freedom”. Co-organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and the Lion Rock Institute, the conference will take place in Hong Kong between November 5th and 8th and discuss the revival of populism and its implications for markets, free trade, and society in general.

Among the list of distinguished speakers are the Hon. Abhisit Vejjajiva, former Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand and current leader of the Thai Democrat Party; the Hon. John Tsang, Financial Secretary of Hong Kong; Dr. Wolf-Dieter Zumpfort, Deputy Chairman of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Board of Directors; Mr. Bill Stacey, Chairman of the Lion Rock Institute; Mr. Fred McMahon, Director of the Centre for Trade and Globalization Studies at the Fraser Institute; and Mr. Tom Palmer, Vice President for International Programs at the US-based Atlas Economic Research Foundation.
